This is always the first thing I plant every year–Radiator Charlie’s Mortgage Lifter tomatoes. Radiator Charlie bred them during the Depression–he sold the plants for $1 each, quite a lot in those days, and indeed “lifted” his mortgage! I consider this a good omen and a fun ritual! . . . These tomatoes are large, beefsteak types. The plants will be available for sale at the Beltane Festival, May 3, in Hazel Dell, along with many other herb and vegetable starts.
