Jim Huling lives in Felida where he grows a plethora of fruits and vegetables on his property, Hawkeye Acres. Here’s what Jim has to say about his practices and experience as a grower:
What are your favorite plants to grow?
I try to grow a little bit of everything but I specialize in growing sweet corn and a variety of tomatoes. I also have about 10 fruit trees and numerous blueberry, raspberry and cascade blackberry plants.
How long have you been gardening?
I guess you could say I grew up gardening as I was raised on a farm in Iowa. However, I became a serious gardener in 2008 shortly after moving to Felida from Arizona.
What advice would you give first time gardeners?
Patience and experimentation. Also remember that you can’t control Mother Nature.
What remedies do you use for pests?
I’m always reading about natural remedies for pest control and try to focus on those as much as possible. I love using cheap beer for slug control.
Do you start from seed or use plant starts?
I grow many veggies from seeds, but also purchase numerous plant starts at the annual Master Gardener Foundation Plant sale.
What soil amendments are used in your garden?
I am blessed to have very good soil, but I also amend it with compost and mostly organic fertilizers.
What are your goals?
My main goal is to continue learning new gardening techniques that will lead to a bountiful edible garden. I am also excited to be one of the founding members of Backyard Bounty Co-op and hope to remain an active member for many years.
